Keiichi Tanaami(Artist, Professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design)

Keiichi Tanaami was born in Tokyo in 1936, graduated from Musasino Art University, currently working as a professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Since the 1960s he has traversed the boundaries of media and genre, to work in a wide variety of mediums including animation, experimental film, painting and sculpture. An iconic forerunner as a variable artist, Tanaami has had considerable influence on young artists throughout the world. During the‘60s, he designed the album jackets such as Jefferson Airplane’s After Bathing at Baxter´s (1967), The Monkees´ Golden Story (1968), and he became the art director of a monthly magazine PLAYBOY in 1975. He has continued to this day to challenge in experimental ways the major issues within contemporary art such as art and design, art and product, and the relation between art and daily life. Recent major exhibitions include: solo exhibition No More War (Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, 2013), Killer Joe’s KEIICHI TANAAMI 1965-1975 (Fondation Speerstra, Apples, 2013), group exhibition Ausweitung der Kampfzone: Die Sammlung 1968 – 2000 (Hamburger Burnhof, Berlin, 2013), among many others. In 2015, he will participate in a group exhibition International Pop, a retrospective of pop art, touring Walker Art Center (NY), Dallas Museum of Art (TX) and Philadelphia Museum of Art (PA) in United States.
